Please follow carefully the steps in the Reporting Protocol for Academic Dishonesty in the Faculty Handbook (p. VII-37). This document is also available to faculty on Canvas. What happens to students when I report them to the Deans office? Their name goes on a list in the office of the academic dean as a first time offender. However, no further punishment is meted out, beyond whatever you have chosen to do in your class, unless you and your chair wish to recommend a more severe response. (See FAQs for students for a full explanation of what happens on each offense.) How does the Pre-professional Recommendations Committee use the list? They use the list to answer as accurately as possible the questions on the recommendation forms. They work hard to nuance their comments and are especially concerned with repeat offenses. Do I really have to report every instance of academic dishonesty? Any offense which you consider serious should be discussed with your chair; together you will decide whether or not to file a formal report with reported to the dean. According to FERPA guidelines the students advisor also has a right to know of the offense. But what if its a first offense? You actually have no way of knowing that it is a first offense. That is why a list is being compiled, so that students who cheat in different classes, and tell every teacher its their first time, will be caught. When might I need to enquire whether a student is on the list? When you are writing a recommendation that asks you to comment on a students integrity. When you are hiring a reader who has access to sensitive files. How can I help prevent academic dishonesty? Here are just a few ideas: Put a notice in your syllabus that cheating is not acceptable, and make it clear on the first day of class what that means. Remind students of the importance of integrity before every major exam. Separate students during test-taking if you have empty desks in your classroom. Do not leave students unsupervised during exams; walk up and down the aisles occasionally. Make multiple versions of objective tests. Make new versions of tests as often as possible. Use turnitin.com for all written assignments. Make written assignments that are unique to your class, and vary them. Surely if students choose to cheat, thats their problem? We hope to create a culture that encurages personal integrity, not a police state. However, we also need to help students to value learning. Most important, when students do cheat, please talk to them about their choice to be dishonest. It may be an excellent teaching moment. <4 6 x | 9 OBCsu'(noq&7̼htcjhtcUhtcOJQJh[+htcOJQJh[+htc56>*ϴ+t5Cϴt5Cϴ3<=5 6 x 9 O0 & Fgdtc & Fgdtcgdtc$a$gdtcD)pqgdtc & Fgdtcgdtc&1h:ptc/ =!8"8#$*%2 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~8XV~_HmH nH sH tH H`H Normal CJOJQJ_HaJmH sH tH DA D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k (No List HH Balloon TextCJOJQJ^JaJ4@4 sNHeader !4 @4 sNFooter !PK![Content_Types].xmlj0 u$Nwc$ans@8JbVKS(.Y$8MVgLYS]"(U֎_o[gv; f>KH|;\XV!]օ Oȥsh]Hg3߶PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!\theme/theme/theme1.xmlYOoE#F{o'NDuر i-q;N3' G$$DAč*iEP~wq4;{o?g^;N:$BR64Mvsi-@R4Œ mUb V*XX! cyg$w.Q "@oWL8*Bycjđ0蠦r,[LC9VbX*x_yuoBL͐u_.
