What does it mean to be faithful to a spouse who is unfaithful to you? How can we be faithful to a God who seems absent? These are the driving questions of Jericho Road: A Musical Event, which made its U.S. debut in February and April at Pacific Union College.鈥淚t鈥檚 a difficult topic,鈥� said Lindsay Morton, associate academic dean, who wrote and produced the musical. 鈥淏ut it鈥檚 one that鈥檚 so important to talk about on a college campus where some young adults are starting to think about life partners.鈥澛燤orton was inspired to write Jericho Road after watching the musical The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown. She wondered how the storyline might have been different if the characters had been Christian. 鈥淛ericho Road is an attempt to answer to that question,鈥� Morton said.The musical鈥檚 main characters, Jake and Leila Carver, are a young Seventh-day Adventist couple who meet, fall in love, marry, and have a child, Amalia. But when life doesn鈥檛 turn out as he expected, Jacob leaves his wife and daughter to pursue his dream of a successful musical career. In February, Paulin Hall will host the U.S. premiere of 鈥淛ericho Road,鈥� a musical written and produced by Lindsay Morton, associate academic dean for PUC. The show was first produced at Avondale University in Australia, and then in Sydney and Perth. As all three were highly successful, Morton suggested it be done at PUC. The rest, as they say, is history. Written in response to 鈥淭he Last Five Years,鈥� a musical by Jason Robert Brown, 鈥淛ericho Road鈥� is a boy-meets-girl, then boy-leaves-girl story. It centers on Leila, a part coincidentally played by PUC student Leila Beltran, and her husband, Jake, played by PUC student (and music major) Tyler Wilensky.鈥淚 fell in love with 鈥楾he Last Five Years,鈥� and found myself wondering how the story would have been different if the couple had been Christian,鈥� Morton explains. So she began pulling together pieces she鈥檇 composed over the years that fit the story she felt developing, and composed a few more around them.
