Jericho Road: PUC Students Shine in U.S. Premier of an Original Musical

What does it mean to be faithful to a spouse who is unfaithful to you? How can we be faithful to a God who seems absent? These are the driving questions of Jericho Road: A Musical Event, which made its U.S. debut in February and April at Pacific Union College.āItās a difficult topic,ā said Lindsay Morton, associate academic dean, who wrote and produced the musical. āBut itās one thatās so important to talk about on a college campus where some young adults are starting to think about life partners.āĀ Morton was inspired to write Jericho Road after watching the musical The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown. She wondered how the storyline might have been different if the characters had been Christian. āJericho Road is an attempt to answer to that question,ā Morton said.The musicalās main characters, Jake and Leila Carver, are a young Seventh-day Adventist couple who meet, fall in love, marry, and have a child, Amalia. But when life doesnāt turn out as he expected, Jacob leaves his wife and daughter to pursue his dream of a successful musical career. An Interview with āJericho Roadā Writer/Producer Lindsay Morton

In February, Paulin Hall will host the U.S. premiere of āJericho Road,ā a musical written and produced by Lindsay Morton, associate academic dean for PUC. The show was first produced at Avondale University in Australia, and then in Sydney and Perth. As all three were highly successful, Morton suggested it be done at PUC. The rest, as they say, is history. Written in response to āThe Last Five Years,ā a musical by Jason Robert Brown, āJericho Roadā is a boy-meets-girl, then boy-leaves-girl story. It centers on Leila, a part coincidentally played by PUC student Leila Beltran, and her husband, Jake, played by PUC student (and music major) Tyler Wilensky.āI fell in love with āThe Last Five Years,ā and found myself wondering how the story would have been different if the couple had been Christian,ā Morton explains. So she began pulling together pieces sheād composed over the years that fit the story she felt developing, and composed a few more around them.
